With recent research indicating that toxic chemicals all over American homes and consumer products are causing a “silent epidemic” of brain damage in young children, it’s time to for a change.
Fortunately, the research, which was published in The Lancet, didn’t come without a few tips of what you could do to avoid the slew of common chemicals the study authors found can be harmful to your children’s health.
“My best advice to pregnant women is that they exercise prudent avoidance of these compounds during pregnancy,” says study coauthor Philip Landrigan, MD, professor and chair of the department of community and preventive medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, whose further qualifications include one of the world’s foremost authorities on children’s environmental health.
#1: Testing your home for lead paint
“We still have a lead-paint problem here, and there are still tens of thousands of apartments and homes that contain lead paint,” Dr. Landrigan explains. Visit epa.gov/lead for helpful advice about how to test for– and safely remove– lead paint prior to renovating a nursery.
#2: Stick with organic
It’s the only real way to ensure pesticides remain out of your diet.
#3: Eat safe seafood
“Eating fish is important in pregnancy. It really is brain food,” he says. #4: Become an activist
“The other thing that parents have to do is remember that they’re citizens,” Dr. Landrigan continues. “They have to start writing to members of Congress and say that it’s high time that this country stop letting untested chemicals get into our food supply, into cosmetics, into products.” Congress is currently debating a new law that would completely reform current chemical regulation policies.
