Common health concerns might always weigh heavily on your mind, but you may not know about some health mistakes you’re making on a daily basis. For optimum wellness, it’s important to stay aware of all health concerns, from eating a healthy breakfast to getting enough sleep.
Hanging wet laundry. According to a study at the Mackintosh Environmental Architecture Research Unit at the Glasgow School of Art, damp clothes can pollute the air, even if your laundry just came out of the washer. This can create an environment full of allergens like dust mites and mold spores, with concentrations that can be 300 percent higher than safe limit levels. Since around 25 percent of homes with air-dried laundry were found to have fungus that can cause lung infections in those with weak immune systems, it’s probably best to hang the wet laundry in an area that has its own heat source and ventilation, according to the researchers.
Brushing after breakfast. Or after any meal, for that matter. According to a 2004 study, people who brush within 20 minutes of consuming something acidic lost more of the layer under the tooth enamel than the people who brushed later. For example, after drinking orange juice, wine, soda or coffee, your saliva needs to neutralize the pH in order to keep the acid from being brushed in to your teeth–which speeds up the erosion of your already softened enamel. To avoid this, drink a glass of water and avoid brushing your teeth for about half an hour, so that your saliva can neutralize the acids and remineralize the enamel.
Potatoes in the fridge. According to a recent consumer update by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), starches that have been fried, baked or roasted can cause the sugar and amino acid aspargine in items such as cookies, chips, French fries, and dark toast to form acrylamide, a chemical that has been linked to cancer. And according to research, potato chips and French fries that have been refrigerated before cooking can cause more starch to become sugar, which can add up to even more of the carcinogen. For safer forms of cooking, try sticking to boiling or steaming. It’s also best to keep your pastries and breads from becoming burnt, since the darker your toast gets, the more acrylamide levels it contains.
Your headache medicine. Turns out your acetaminophen can become a problem when you use it as more than just a headache reliever. According to Harrison Ndetan, MSC, MPH, DrPH, assistant professor of research and biostatistics at Parker University in Dallas, the combination of this and an alcoholic drink can negatively affect your kidneys. In the study led by Ndetan, subjects who took this combination on a weekly basis had a 123 percent higher increase in risk of kidney disease than people who took the pill on its own. According to Ndetan, acetaminophen can keep a certain protein in the body from metabolizing alcohol, and the dehydration that alcohol causes certainly does not help.
That new faux-leather wallet. As it turns out, the Center for Environmental Health (CEH) has found that about 15 percent of purses and accessories sold in stores have high levels of lead, even though the lead limit was addressed in 2010. Handbags, wallets and belts made out of brightly colored pleather tend to have lead levels that are higher than what is allowed in children’s products. Yellow, green, orange and red purses seemed to have the most, and the lead can cause developmental problems in children, and is associated with both heart disease and cancer. To avoid this, try to stick to products made out of canvas, nylon, hemp, or leather.
