Gas and bloating are an unfortunate and often inevitable part of life. We have all been there. Our jeans won’t button as easily, our T-shirts seem to fit tighter, and when we walk past a mirror, it looks as if we’re preparing to become the next Santa Claus. There are plenty of pills advertised as anti-bloating and anti-gas medications, but for those of us who don’t want to take pills, there are plenty of home remedies to alleviate these issues.
Ginger is one of my favorite spices to use for digestive problems. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it a great solution to a multitude of stomach issues including gas and bloating. Eating fresh ginger before meals is a great way to prevent bloating, especially if you’re about to embark on a spicy or salty dish. Another way to ease your bloating is to slice some fresh or dried ginger into a cup, add lemon and boiling water, and start sipping that rumbling in your stomach away.
Peppermint is a very popular, and seasonally appropriate, way to alleviate stomach issues. Chewing on peppermint leaves, adding a few drops of oil into a cup of cold water, or drinking some peppermint tea are a few ways to utilize this herb to relieve your gas and bloating. Another popular herb to use is chamomile. Much like ginger, chamomile acts as an anti-inflammatory, making it a blessing to the digestive tract. Chamomile is a very popular, and delicious tea, so drink up!
The fennel seed acts as a diuretic and anti-microbial which will help to reduce uncomfortable bloating. Steeping crushed fennel in boiling water to create fennel tea will help to remedy your gassiness and bloated tummy.
Warm, not boiling, lemon water is yet another solution for your aching stomach. The lemon’s acidic properties help to break down foods, and provide instant relief to gas and bloating. Lukewarm lemon water is also a very popular morning drink, as it helps to boost your metabolism for the rest of the day.
The next time you find yourself with discomforting gas, or inconvenient bloating, try one of these home remedies. Odds are you have at least a few of these ingredients around the house, and can provide yourself quick relief. These remedies will also provide you with more than just a way to rid of gas and bloating, as all of these herbs and spices contain a number of essential vitamins and nutrients that are extremely beneficial to the body.
