The Benefits of Berries

Berries are delicious, sweet, and aesthetically pleasing food items. Contrary to their cute and colorful look, these squishy fruits pack a big healthy punch. The three berries with the healthiest reputation are blueberries, acai berries, and goji berries.

Now, this isn’t to say that raspberries, strawberries, or blackberries are not chock-full of beneficial nutrients because they certainly are, however the three aforementioned berries tend to be the healthiest! Here’s why:

Goji Berries

The goji berry is a pinkish red shriveled looking berry, native to China. This berry is rich in iron, so much so that it actually contains 15 times more iron than spinach. The goji berry is also a high protein snack, and high in Vitamins A, B, C. The goji can be consumed raw, dried, cooked, and even in wine and teas. This berry contains antioxidants as well as HGH, the human growth hormone which is known to increase libido, aid in sleep, and further brain health. Adding goji berries into your diet may also help aid in weight loss!

Blueberries are one of the most popular berries, known for their wealth of antioxidants. They are eaten in yogurts, oatmeal, cereals, by the handful, and are a great addition to salads and dressings. Blueberries are a great aid to the nervous system, helping to protect the nerves from oxygen damage as well as increasing cognitive brain function and memory. Blueberries combat free radicals, helping with digestion as well as lowering the risk of heart disease.

Acai Berries

Hailing from Central and South America, the acai berry has recently become quite a fad in North America. A lot of people eat these berries in yogurt or fruit bowls, and can be added in smoothies or even free-dried and crushed into powder. Like the blueberry, acai berries are an amazing source of antioxidants, actually containing two times more antioxidants than blueberries. The antioxidants found in these fruits help lower cholesterol, detox the digestive system, and decrease respiratory distress. Acai is often used in beauty products and skin treatments, likely due to its detoxing properties.

Adding any one of these berries would likely be beneficial to your overall health. These fruits are tasty additions to any meal. They are easy to throw into a salad, on top of cereal or oatmeal, or to add into your next smoothie. So although they are small in size, don’t underestimate their nutritious power!
