Your Diet May Consist of Too Many Carbs


Pasta, bread, cereal, crackers, chips, that really sounds like all of the good stuff to a carb-junkie like myself.

Those are pretty much all of my favorite foods, and a few of those are probably your favorites too! If you’re a carb-lover like myself, you might notice that it takes several handfuls of chips, or a few helpings of pasta to really make yourself feel full and satisfied. There are signs, other than an unsatisfied appetite, that might be telling you you are consuming way too many carbohydrates. 

You may find that your weight often fluctuates, even if you are consuming complex carbs such as fruit, whole grains, and vegetables. The weight you find yourself gaining generally tends to be in your face or stomach, rather than in your thighs or hips. It may be beneficial to start fresh and cleanse your diet of any carbohydrates, even the healthy ones. Sticking to dark green vegetables and high protein foods for about two weeks can help to cleanse your body of it’s dependency on carbohydrates, then you will be able to begin implementing complex carbs back into your diet. 

Too many carbohydrates actually affect your mood as well. You may experience severe ups and downs in your behavior throughout the day. When you are hungry you could suffer from serious irritability that only goes away once you begin eating. It makes you bad company! Like a vicious cycle, you may even find yourself craving sugary foods, or carbohydrates when you’re anxious, upset or tired as well. Diet has so much to do with our mental health, therefore you might want to reevaluate your diet if you are experiencing such extreme mood swings, especially around meal time. 

Pay attention to what you are craving too. Are you craving fruit, eggs, poultry, or meat? Is it just about time to eat a full meal? Have you filled up on water? Your body is telling you it’s actually time to eat! You want real substantial foods, and you deserve it! But what if you’ve just eaten lunch and now you’re craving some starchy snacks, or a big chocolate brownie? This is yet another indicator there are just too many carbohydrates in your diet! If you’ve filled up on a substantial meal you should not be craving these foods, especially immediately after eating. 

If you find yourself relating to a lot of these issues, it’s time to rethink your diet and figure out if your body has become dependent on carbohydrates. Carbs are not the enemy, but the refined flours and sugars in many carbohydrate rich foods are. Consider a cleanse, and when it doubt eat protein!
